New media/broadcast and PR interns
Earn college credit while working with Marketing and News Services in the WSU College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and WSU Extension.
CAHNRS is the largest and most diverse college in the WSU system. In addition to WSU’s agricultural and natural resource science programs, CAHNRS is home to several design programs (landscape architecture, interior design, and apparel, merchandising, design and textiles), as well as the departments of food science and human development. Interns are encouraged to pursue their interests within the wide scope of CAHNRS and WSU Extension programs. We especially encourage students from non-CAHNRS majors to bring their fresh perspectives to our programs. Hot topics include but are not limited to:
- Organic, sustainable and community-supported agriculture
- Biofuels
- The aging of the American farmer and the next generation of farmers
- Food as a national security issue
- Food safety
- Sustainable design
New media broadcast journalism internships
- Produce radio programming (podcasts) and push to media outlets. Outlets are radio stations and Web sites. Your job is to interview faculty and/or staff and to produce fascinating, topical reports that will draw traffic to our Web sites, incite conversation on blogs and podcast sites, and earn airplay in traditional radio markets. We supply all needed equipment (hardware and software). You’ll work closely with the Marketing and News Services team so that your projects match your interests and abilities.
- Produce video programming (vodcasts) and push to media outlets. Outlets are Web sites and possibly TV stations. Your job is to interview faculty and/or staff and to produce fascinating, topical reports that will draw traffic to our Web sites, incite conversation on blogs and vodcast sites (e.g., youtube, Google video), and earn airplay in traditional TV markets. We supply all needed equipment (hardware and software). You’ll work closely with the Marketing and News Services team so that your projects match your interests and abilities.
Public relations internship
- Develop, write and post news releases and feature stories for use in a variety of venues, including print and online media;
- Garner positive exposure for CAHNRS and Extension education and research programs using "conversation management" on the Web (e.g., blogs, youtube, flickr, etc.);
- Use your news writing skills to earn positive media coverage of CAHNRS and Extension education and research programs in both traditional publications Web sites.

Commitment
We'll work with your schedule but expect to work an average of 10 hours/week (160 for the semester). Expect to produce a new 30-90 second draft of a project every week if audio or visual. (Individual mileage may vary.) Expect to come away from your internship with a portfolio of 10 polished and professional pieces, as well as with Web stat reports proving the traffic your work has generated.
